His followup, Dark Sun, continues the story with the development of the hydrogen bomb, and does just as good a job even though much of that story is (or was then) still much more highly classified. This is the complete story of how the bomb was developed. The Los Alamos scientists determined they could use a fission explosion (basically an atomic bomb) to heat a layer of dense plastic foam surrounding thermonuclear material. Sheinkin concludes his narrative with the statement: “The making of the atomic bomb is one of history's most amazing examples of teamwork and genius and poise under pressure. Compared to his other works, like the magisterial (and quite hefty) The Making of the Atomic Bomb, this book breezes by in 272 chatty pages. This chapter from Rhodes contains much interesting information. The movie was written by actor-director Chris Eigeman, who will also direct the film. The making of the atomic bomb is one of history's most amazing examples of teamwork and genius and poise under pressure. It is told in rich, human, political, and scientific detail, from the turn-of-the-century discovery of the vast energy locked inside the atom to the dropping of the first bombs on Japan. Albert Einstein may have been one of the most intelligent humans that ever lived. The key to making this new design work: Plastic. It's kind of a nice thing to read about, pleasant to ignore the other parts of the atomic bomb's development. Army wouldn't let Einstein work on the making of the atomic bomb.
